Fall Protection Tips

In the last few weeks there has been a few fatal falls in the construction industry. They are still under investigation so there are really no good conclusions or facts about what happened. Now is the time to regroup your workers and give them a refresher course on fall protection.

You would be surprised at the amount of workers that really have no ideas of the capacities of the Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS). Most of the workers know that they are required to wear it but things like anchor points, inspection, and fall distances is where I see the most problems. Here are a few quick tips to keep your workers safe!

  1.  Proper Anchor Points
    1. Proper Anchor Points must withstand 5000 lbs
      1. Thats equal to a full sized pick up truck
    2. Always anchor overhead
    3. Avoid side loading hooks
    4. Never anchor to any electrical systems or fire suppression systems (Red Pipe)
  2. Inspecting the PFAS
    1. Follow manufactures recomendations
      1. Most have a 5 year useable life
    2. Look for cuts, burns, rips, rust, or chemicals
  3. Fall Distances
    1. Here is a good diagram for fall distances-
    2. You must have atleast 17-18 feet of clearence under you or use a device called an SRL (Self Retractable Lanyard)
      1. SRLs will normally stop you with in 2-3 feet
  4. Storing the PFAS
    1. Store these in a cool dry place
      1. Try keeping them in a 5 gallon bucket with lid
    2. Keep them off of the ground and out of the dirt
  5. Rescue
    1. Always have a rescue plan
      1. Plan to make verbal contact with in 6 minutes
      2. Plan for rescue within 15 minutes
